How to design an amazing bespoke conservatory

Tags:

Each and every home is different.

There are obvious, concrete differences, like those in architectural design, décor and furnishing. These power your home’s kerbside appeal, first impression and general liveability. Then, however, there are some more complicated, fuzzier factors — many estate agents will tell stories of trying in vain to sell perfectly well put-together houses that just felt like they lacked … something.

A house should feel like a home, is the point. It should feel inhabited, human, have “flow”, and a spark of individuality. And, as it often adds the finishing flourish to a property, a conservatory really can make or break a home.

If you’re looking to build or replace an extension but feel sceptical of mass-produced design, like to prioritise quality and have a particular vision for your home you don’t want to compromise on, you might be in luck. At Britannia, we have a long track record of building bespoke conservatories to our customers’ exact specifications.

How to design an amazing bespoke conservatory

What is a bespoke conservatory?

A bespoke conservatory is a conservatory that’s been designed and fitted with a unique style and shape to your specification. Custom-build conservatories can be large or small, flashy or understated, completely bespokely-designed or only subtly different from usual.

Made-to-measure conservatories are our answer to those customers who aren’t happy with some builders’ one-size-fits-all approach. Received a shake of the head or an exorbitant quote for an extension that’s not the usual shape or size? We’ll be happy to give it a second look. Not a fan of glass roofs or exposed guttering? We can fit a tiled roof, complete with aesthetically-pleasing cornices.

We’ve had particular success fitting made-to-measure conservatories into awkward empty spaces around the edges of our customers’ homes, or treating a garden’s unconventional shape as an opportunity for interesting design rather than a dealbreaker.

Similarly, if you already have a conservatory but have ideas to improve it, we can work to fit decorative features, superior insulation or new, sleeker windows and doors.

What can I do with a bespoke conservatory?

Rather than sticking to formula, bespoke conservatories allow room for experimentation and flair. Via consultation with our team of experts, we’ll be able to build up a plan that works with your vision and our capabilities, and go from there.

A bespoke conservatory can serve as a seating area, dining space, playroom or gateway to the outdoors. A well-insulated, modern conservatory can feel airy in summer but cosy in winter, particularly if paired with underfloor heating or a wood-burning stove.

A three or four-piece suite of furniture can create a welcoming reading nook, a place for drinks with friends or a mini-cinema for a family movie night, while a fold-out dining table can transform the space into the perfect room to host guests for celebrations and get-togethers.

You can chat to our team or flick through our brochure for more ideas.

Shape

Traditionally, most conservatories come in a single, square-ish shape. However, this is more as a result of convention than physical limitation — it’s perfectly possible to design and build conservatories in different shapes and sizes to maximise your available space. We can fit long, sweeping conservatories, or ones that form a T-shape or an L-shape, perhaps with an outdoor seating area lodged into the elbow.

As ever, there’s nothing wrong with employing traditional features in your modern design. For instance, the kind of sweeping three or five-panel bay window usually fitted for Victorian-type conservatories can add a stunning centrepiece to your design.

Style and substance

If you love the idea of an airy, bright space to use as you see fit but find conservatories to be greenhouse-like, superficial or flimsy, that doesn’t have to be the end of the matter. We can build sturdy conservatories that feel like a solid, integral part of your home — including a sloped tiled roof, a low half-wall and even triple glazing.

A well-made, well-fitted conservatory always impresses visitors. For homes that are older, more ornate or have a certain style, however, you might want to add a few flourishes to provide continuity and beauty.

A roof lantern, for instance, lets sunlight cascade into your home through a roof-mounted “wedding cake” style window. This gives light all year round even when skies are grey, and pleasingly blends function and beauty.

Another option is the addition of decorative glass. We offer a huge range of bespoke designs from Georgian-style bars (built into the glazing for stress-free cleaning) in a variety of designs, to classic leaded glass and detailed, eye-catching centrepieces.

If you have a particular family symbol or meaningful design you want to remember fondly, you can order a bespoke centrepiece or particular decorative motif for your extension — because we manufacture our own windows in our Clevedon factory, we can tailor-make almost any glass design. The first step, as always, is to contact us for a no-obligation chat. Otherwise, our brochure outlines the types of coloured and textured glass on offer.

Is a bespoke conservatory worth it?

At Britannia, we’ll never try to sell our customers the wrong product for them — building an extension for your home is a permanent choice, and therefore one you have to get right. However, if you have a limited or unusual space, a particular aesthetic or structural preferences and a clear vision for your extension, we believe we’re a good pick to design, manufacture and fit it.

The finished product will be a bright, airy, one-of-a-kind space which is bound to enhance your enjoyment of your home — not to mention its market value.

Our bespoke conservatories are all secured with our 10-year manufacturer’s guarantee, backed up by various competitive financing options and endorsed by Secured by Design, an official police initiative promoting home security.

If you’re interested, why not give us a call today? We’re always happy to talk over your ideas for your property, give an approximate, no-obligation quote or organise a home visit.
