What is the difference between French windows and French doors?
Both French windows and French doors open and close in the same way, but they have different locking systems and handles. This is because of the different sizes (French doors are big enough to walk through) and the different levels of security required.
French door frames and sashes are much thicker than French windows, and the size is also different; French doors are much taller and thinner than French windows. Despite these differences, both have two side-hung sashes that open from the middle with no pillar between them. This means that when both windows or doors are open, you have an unobstructed view of the outside.
French doors are most often used as doors that open out into the garden, whereas French windows are smaller and can be used on any floor. They give you increased ventilation and a fabulous view!
Why are French windows called French windows?
This story is the same for both French windows and doors. In the Renaissance during the 17th century, new ideas in art and architecture were developing, with light as a central theme. To get more light in their homes, they started to use more glass in their windows. This trend came over to France, where they made large windows that could either be used in the home as doors or as a way to get out onto their balconies on summer days. This meant they could light their homes more effectively, and the design became popularised across Western Europe in a few decades.
Are French windows secure?
French windows can be as secure as any other window depending on the quality of the materials used to make it, the type of glazing and the lock mechanism used. At Britannia, we take security very seriously, and all our products are approved by the Police-led Secure by Design initiative, which works to reduce burglaries in the UK. We use three-point locking systems, locking shoot-bolts, and high security hinges on all our windows, and we use thermally toughened glass if the window is on the ground floor. Either way, our expert installers won’t leave your home until your windows are completely secure and they have explained how to lock them correctly.
Do French windows swing in or out?
Thankfully, this is a decision you get to make – it’s completely up to you! Some people prefer inward-opening windows because they are easier to clean from the inside, however if you have large, heavy curtains then it could cause a slight obstruction.
Outward opening windows mean your indoor space is not hampered by any window frames. Our windows have modern anti-slam windows, so it is unlikely that they will get caught by sudden bursts of winds. Outward opening windows also collect less rain and debris in the frames, but ultimately the decision lies with you and which would work better for you and your home.
What are the advantages of French windows?
French windows are prized for their ability to give you unobstructed views out from your home. This makes French windows an excellent option if you have beautiful vistas – you will be able to enjoy the landscape without any pillars or panels in the way. Not just good for views, French windows also allow you to ventilate your home effectively, as there is nothing preventing the breeze from flowing inside. These windows can give you increased light, better views and more efficient ventilation; talk to one of our experts today to see how they could work in your home.
Can French windows be used as a fire escape?
The UK government-authorised scheme FENSA requires that on upper floors, each room must be fitted with fire escape windows as long as they aren’t over 4.5 metres above ground level – which is generally the case for most standard first floor windows. The stipulations for a fire escape window is that it must be able to open to create an unobstructed space of 0.3 metres squared. French windows open without any obstruction so as long as they are the right size, they can be considered a FENSA-approved fire escape window.
